Primate Orbit Explorer
For a class project, I took measurements on some 99 frontal images of primate crania. I stumbled upon NIH ImageJ for taking linear and area measurements of the circumorbital region.
I also used ImageJ to trace and then cut out the left orbit, which I saved as a bitmap. Below is a juvenile female Alouatta seniculus orbit:
To quantify the shape of the orbit (for use in PCAs), I wrote a quick Perl script that used ImageMagick to take measurements from the maximum of the orbital margin, to the margin in 10% increments, as shown below:
Averaging these measures and creating box and whisker plots result in figures like the one below, a composite of all Old World monkey orbit measures.
